hen I woke the next morning, she was gone â her own bed was empty except for me, and a small note that she had left folded on the pillow.
It took me a moment to realize that she wasnât there. I wanted her back at once, craved her instantly â I needed to see her. I wanted to wake up next to her, for the two of us to go out and get breakfast together and spend an hour flirting over our coffee as we danced around the memory of what had happened the night before.
I unfolded the note, which told me that sheâd had an early shift and that I could stay as long as I liked. I smiled at it, traced the kiss that she had left at the bottom of it with my finger. Hard to believe that everything had really happened the way it did last night. Hard to believe that we had really done all of that. But I knew that it was the truth, and I knew that there was no way in hell that I was going to forget it.
I rolled over on to her side of the bed and inhaled the scent of her that was still trapped in the pillow. Yeah, I could get used to this. I liked the way I felt, being in her bed, waking up here, even if I would have preferred to do it with her at my side. I couldnât stop thinking about her, even when she wasnât here, and that was some sort of superpower.
I climbed out of bed and grabbed my clothes so that I could head down to the shop and get some work done â I knew that I didnât want to spend all my time just sitting around here, tempting as it might have been to just wait for her to come back home so that I could see her again. I wished that I could just reach out and bring her back here, promise her that Iâd make it worth her while...
But she must have already known that. She was the one, after all, who had rode me last night as though she was trying to start her own damn ranch. I knew that sheâd had a good time, as good a time as Iâd had, and that she would be coming back for more as soon as she got the chance.
I headed down to the shop mainly because I knew I would need something to fill the rest of my day before I came back to see her again â she had a demanding job, and I didnât want to get in the way of that for anything. I knew that she was committed to doing it right, and I had to say, I admired her for that â for her commitment, her intelligence, the way that she was willing to share her compassion with anyone who needed it.
Or maybe I was just looking for more things to
